End of a Generation - Rest in Peace, Grandma Phyl

RIP Grandma Phyl

My grandma passed away today. At 95, she was my last living grandparent; her passing is the end of a generation in my family.

As a grandmother, she was nothing short of incredible. She and my grandfather, who passed 15 years ago or so, spoiled all of their grandkids. Shopping for school clothes, giving us free reign at "the lake," and taking us to movies our parents didn't want us to see. She really was great.

I had a fairly idyllic childhood, and I owe a lot of that to her.

Rest In Peace, Grandma Phyl.

I'm reflecting on my grandmother's funeral today, a full four years after she passed. I listened to one of her favorite songs, We'll Meet Again by Very Lynn. It's old-timey, of course, but it's also beautiful. I remember making fun of her music at the lake once, blasting through the window speaker of the record player my grandfather likely bought at the Hillsdale auction. I was probably 10, maybe 12. She said something to the effect of "Even when you don't like the music, listen to the lyrics..they may give you something to like." That has always stuck with me.

I've got that song favorited in my music library and play it from time to time when I think of Grandma Phyl. I still struggle with old-timey music, but she was right–the lyrics are beautiful.

So will you, please, say hello
To the folks that I know?
Tell them I won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
I was singing this song
We'll meet again
Don't know where,
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day

I'm not religious and I don't believe in any sort of after life. But, I do believe I just reconnected with my grandmother a bit by simply reflecting on the day she passed, looking at some pictures, listening to that song, and thinking about that day at the lake. And the sun did peek through a bit today.
