Bioluminescence first evolved in animals at least 540 million years ago (sciencedaily.com)
Statistically speaking, bioluminescence first appeared on earth at least as early as 540 million years ago. That's incredible, though there's something in this article that I find even more remarkable - "Bioluminescence...has independently evolved at least 94 times in nature." Talk about a winning strategy.
After reading that article on bioluminescence, I figured I had to have some photos of the boys with lightning bugs (fireflies?). So, I searched the photos app on my phone for "lightning bugs" and it dutifully returned a series of five photos from over a decade ago. Pretty amazing.
This one shows Jake with fascinated by a ligtning bug resting on his hand (hard to see as it's not illuminated).
And here's Jonathan on the same day, with a slew of lightning bugs on his hands. I managed to catch one while lit!
