Heading home today.
June 28, 2025
Saturday

Renee and I had coffee on the patio, watching the sun rise and the beach come to life before heading out.

We had a nice send off, spotting this tiny rainbow literally minutes before taking the chairs in from the patio and heading out. So long, SPB, we'll be back in a few weeks.
We're delayed a bit at TPA. Not a big deal, since we're meeting Jonathan at DTW as he arrives from Boston. His flight is a bit later than ours, so we're waiting somewhere anyway.

A scene from a delay.
This Is What Happens When Hertz's AI Scanner Finds Damage on Your Rental (thedrive.com)
When he returned the car, he did so with a 1-inch scuff on the driver’s side rear wheel. Patrick says he was alerted to the damage “minutes” after dropping the VW off, and with it, charges for the blemish: $250 for the repair, $125 for processing, and another $65 administrative fee. That’s $440 all told, for curb rash on one wheel.
We rented with Hertz at TPA this week and drove through one of these scanners on pickup and return. I just checked my receipt and feel lucky I wasn't billed for pebbles in the tire grooves. We might need to rethink our loyalty to Hertz.
As an aside, I asked the clerk about the scanner as we left the parking garage at pickup...he snickered and said "yeah, they're crazy...meanwhile, I still have Internet Explorer on the computer here...."
